Wuhan University (WHU) is a comprehensive and key national university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is also one of the “Project 211” and “Project 985” universities with full support in the construction and development from the central and local governments of China. The School of Water Resources and Hydropower Engineering (SWRHE) consists of four departments, i.e. Department of Agricultural Water Resources Engineering, Department of Hydropower Engineering, Department of Harbor, Waterway and Coastal Engineering, Department of Hydrology and Water Resources. It offers 4 Bachelor-degree programs, 9 Master-degree programs and 7 PhD-degree programs, covering a full spectrum of research and application in water resources and hydropower engineering. With a total of 230 staff and 2300 full-time students, SWRHE is one of the major schools of Wuhan University (WHU). Since its founding in 1928, the Water Resources Engineering Discipline at Wuhan University has always been pursuing to become a leading national and international center of higher education, scientific research, and engineering practices in the fields of water resources and hydropower engineering. During the development history of nearly 90 years, this discipline has made tremendous achievements. In 1981, the school of approved by Chinese government to become one of the first batch of institutions qualified to confer the PhD degrees, and the first four PhD programs (sub-disciplines) include Agricultural Water Resources Engineering, Hydropower Engineering, Harbor, Waterway and Coastal Engineering. In 1987, Agricultural Water Resources Engineering program was selected as one of the first batch of national key disciplines. In 2002, the programs of both Hydropower Engineering and Hydrology Water Resources Engineering were also listed as national key disciplines. In 2007, the whole Water Resources Engineering Discipline of WHU was chosen as one of national key disciplines after being ranked tied in third place in the nation-wide discipline evaluation by Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. In the third round of discipline evaluation by Ministry of Education in 2012, the Water Resources Engineering Discipline of WHU was ranked third again. The constant and substantial financial supports from both the central and local governments have greatly contributed to the success of the Water Resources Engineering Discipline of WHU. This discipline has been listed as the national “985” and “211” key construction discipline, and also become a discipline supported by “World-Class University and First-Rate Discipline Construction Plan” of Wuhan University. With such concrete supports, the Water Resources Engineering Discipline is striving to become a world-class discipline in about 10-20 years by attracting the worldwide outstanding talents to produce world-class researches.
